Mullet Cutoff Story from Wcco.com
(WCCO) Spring Lake Park, Minn. Sometimes the past is best left in the past. But unfortunately, sometimes people have a hard time letting go.
That's right, we're talking mullets. And when some regulars at a bar in Spring Lake Park, Minn. noticed there were still too many people with mullets walking in the door, they decided to do something about it.
On most nights, things are pretty mellow at Monte's sports bar. Regulars show up to wind down. But one Friday night last year, all that changed.
Welcome to Mullet Mania -- a quest by a couple of patrons to rid their watering hole of the hairdo that is overdue for an update.
"So it's started as a joke that we were going to run around with scissors and cut off all the mullets and ponytails," said organizer Darice Weems.
What they did, is turn it into a money-maker. They raised scholarship money for the local high school by putting bounties out on people's heads.
"It was pandemonium. We couldn't keep up with the bounties. We had three and four bounties at a time going," Weems said.
They also donate all the leftovers to Locks for love to make wigs for cancer patients. Darice Weems has watched it turn the rebellious into willing candidates.
"You know I've been growing my hair out since they told me I couldn't. And my niece has cancer and I think this might be a good time to give it up," she said.
Mullet Mania is now an annual event. Erick Wright is a prime target this year.
"I play in a band. I don't know, it's been this long forever. I don't remember when it was short," Wright said.
A little deja vu may be in his future come Friday night.
Wigs can be made of whiskers as well. And anyone coming into Monte's this Friday night, may find they'll be shedding more than the stress of their work week.
"So it's a win-win for everybody. We don't have to look at as many mullets and long hairs. The guys get free haircuts, and school gets free scholarships and Locks of Love gets a lot of hair from a small town," Weems said.
Mullet mania is from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday at Monte's and anyone with locks to lop off is welcome to attend.
